The State of Region Where Typhoon Haiyan Struck
We can know the power of typhoon Haiyan by comparing the state of Tacloban where typhoon Haiyan struck by dividing it into before, during, and after.
- The State of Tacloban before Haiyan struck Philippines
Tacloban, the region most damaged by Haiyan, is a principal area of Leyte in the eastern part of the Visayan Islands in central Philippines. It is the largest city and distribution center in the eastern part of the Visayan Islands and is equipped with oil storage and airport facilities. Fishing is active, and it is a collection of nearby agricultural products such as rice, corn, and Manila ginseng.
- The State of Tacloban during Haiyan was Striking Philippines
It occurred on November 4, 2013 and reached the Philippines on November 7, just before landing on Samir Island in the Philippines, developing an average wind speed of 87m/s (313.2km/h) and a maximum wind speed of 105m/s (380km/h). As it passed through the central Philippines, its power gradually strengthened, reaching an average wind speed of 315 km/h (87.5 m/s) and a maximum wind speed of 379 km/h per minute. This is above the 5th grade (wind speed of 260km or more per hour) super typhoon, and was also the highest level in the history of typhoon observation at the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). Until the moment it escaped from the Philippines, the intensity of the fifth-grade super typhoon remained at the same. A weather observatory designed to withstand wind speeds of 103m/s (200km/h) located in the Philippines was destroyed by Haiyan. This fact shows how powerful it was.
In particular, the central coastal area, including Tacloban City, was severely damaged by the storm tsunami. Haiyen was unusually a type of storm tsunami rushing in at once in just a few minutes. So, the storm tsunami, which had been flocking at once, approached the bay and became a large tsunami-like wave, and swept the coast. As a result, in Tacloban City, many residents who were evacuated to the lower floors such as large hospitals and cathedrals to avoid the storm were submerged in tsunamis.
- The State of Tacloban after Haiyan Struck Philippines
The Philippines declared a national disaster because of the typhoon Hiayan and made all efforts to restore it. Haiyan killed 6,329 people and 1,074 people in the Philippines, and property damage amounted to $2.86 billion.
Also, there is a tragic anecdote related to it. American movie star Paul Walker died in a car accident on November 30, 2013 while going home from a Philippine charity event which was held to recover from the damage caused by Haiyan.
